The EU requested to table UN proposal on North Korea
Tuesday, 04 November 2008
The EU requested to table UN proposal on North Korea - The humanitarian situation in North Korea is very serious. The UN should strengthen its annual resolution on North Korea by referring to the doctrine on the responsibility of every state to protect its population, says special adviser Hilde Salvesen at the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights. Jointly with Václav Havel, the Oslo Center has urged the EU Precidency to submit the proposal to the UN.

The Oslo Center also suggests that the UN Secretary General establish a committee to investigate the situation in North Korea in order to assess whether international law is being violated.

The two recommendations to the UN are based on the report “Failure to Protect: The Ongoing Challenge of North Korea”, that was published last September. The report documents an extremely serious situation for the people of North Korea.
